Assist Training on Developing Coaching Skills (Calgary)

June 2, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

A Coach Approach to Peer Support

By taking a “coach approach” in conversations with individuals facing challenges, peer support volunteers can help others feel seen, heard and understood. This unique approach to conversations is different than what is typically experienced in professional relationships where consulting or advice-giving is the norm.

Drawing from the core competencies used in the coaching profession, practical skills and approaches will be explored in this workshop led by certified professional coach and lawyer, Karmen Masson. Participants will learn and practise how to:

  • Create a safe and supportive environment that quickly produces mutual trust and respect
  • Communicate effectively through active listening, powerful questioning and direct communication
  • Help others gain awareness, design actions and set goals that are most important to them

Participants will experience demonstrations of real coaching conversations and have opportunities to practice their skills and new approaches with other volunteers. To enrich the practical experience, participants are encouraged to bring at least one personal or professional issue or challenge that they are currently facing and willing to share for purposes of practise. No issue is too small or too large.

To RSVP, please email the Program & Volunteer Manager, Heather Patrao, at communications@lawyersassist.ca.
